| Alba (A) | Foliage grey-green, excellent disease resistance. Scented. Flowers in early summer. | ||||||||
| Bourbon (B) | Developed in Mid Victorian times. Popular for long flowering periods. Highly scented. | ||||||||
| Centifolia (C) | Produce large flowers on long arching stems. | ||||||||
| China (CH) | China roses, perpetual flowering on compact upright growth. | ||||||||
| Damask (D) | Good sturdy growth and excellent disease resistance. All have distinct Damask perfume. | ||||||||
| Portland (P) | All continuous flowering and richly fragrant. | ||||||||
| Gallica (G) | Thrives in even poor soil, very healthy and usually scented. Most flower in mid Summer. | ||||||||
| Hybrid Perpetual (HP) | Forerunner of modern bush roses. Bear large richly scented successive blooms. | ||||||||
| Moss (M) | Richly scented with moss covered buds. | ||||||||
| Hybrid Musk (HM) | Evolved in early 20th Century. Healthy and free flowering. All have musk scent. | ||||||||
| Rugosa (R) | Healthiest of all roses, leathery leaves, scented producing Autumn hips. Useful as hedging. | ||||||||
| Polyanthus (POLY) | Compact, useful little rose producing flower clusters until late Autumn. | ||||||||
| Teas (T) | Highly scented, most need a warm spot, but are fully hardy. | ||||||||
| Noisette (N) | Highly scented and free flowering. | ||||||||
| Rambier (RA) | Vigorous, flexible stems make ideal covering plants. Many flower once but in great profusion. | ||||||||
| Climber (CL) | Varieties introduced in 20th Century, mostly fragrant and repeat flowering. | ||||||||
